Fast Food Review: Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich from Burger King

Here at GrubGrade, we have done reviews of  grilled chicken sandwiches from three of some of the top fast food restaurants:  The Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich from Chick-fil-A, The Premium Grilled Chicken Club from McDonald’s and  The Ultimate Chicken Grill from Wendy’s.  I was trying to think of  any other popular fast food chains that carry a great grilled chicken sandwich and then I remembered Burger King.  We did a review on their Tendercrisp Bacon and Ranch Chicken Sandwich, so here is the healthier version:  The Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich.

Let me start off by saying that they definitely got the name right on this sandwich.    The chicken in this sandwich is definitely “tender” and practically melts in your mouth,  no fat or gristle here.

This sandwich is a described by BK as:

A juicy, grilled chicken breast filet on a corn-dusted bun, topped with crisp lettuce and tomato.

Not quite an accurate description.  Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the better chicken sandwiches, flavor-wise, that I have had.  The bun is soft and fresh.  The chicken breast is a good size, moist and full of flavor.  The slice of tomato is your typical fast food tomato, although, not really as fresh as it could be.  The main problem that I have with this sandwich is that the lettuce is not crisp. For some reason, BK just can’t get their lettuce right.  Perhaps it’s the way that they cut it???  Just limp and flavorless.  They could really learn a lesson from Chick-fil-A.

Another big issue, is that this sandwich is just plain messy to eat. Way too much mayonnaise.  I guess that’s why it is so slippery, the sandwich was just sliding apart as I was trying to eat it.  So as for grubbing on the go-that is a NO NO (unless of course, you want to wear some of your meal).

014With a price of $4.09 and putting the lettuce/tomato/messiness aside, this is a pretty decent sandwich.  The sandwich nutritionally comes out with 490 calories and 21 grams of fat so it has the “healthier” advantage over the Tendercrisp but doesn’t come close to Chick-fil-A’s grilled chicken.  The flavor must come from the (over half a day’s worth) 1220 mg of sodium, so if you are watching your sodium intake, you might now want to grub on this sandwich.  If you have ever had the Tendercrisp Bacon and Ranch Chicken Sandwich, you might want to give this grilled counterpart a try.  Your taste buds might find it worthwhile.

  • Pros: Decent sized sandwich.  Tender and juicy chicken with a great flavor.  Obviously healthier than the Tendercrisp.  Comparable in price to the other grilled chicken sandwiches.
  • Cons: BK lettuce-wilted. Very messy sandwich.  Highest in fat  (21g) as compared to the Chick-fil-A (3g), Wendy’s (7g) and McDonald’s (17g) grilled chicken sandwiches.
