Slim Jim On The Outs?

July 08, 2009 By: Bear Silber Category: Food News

It has been reported by the New York Post that Slim Jim may be on it’s way out…well not exactly. You might remember the recent explosion at the factory. Seems production hasn’t started since and parent company ConAgra isn’t sure when they’ll get them motors running again. They’ve said it will be at least a month and there is only a limited supply of jerky sticks on shelves.

Really?!? I find that hard to believe. If you were to gather all the Slim Jim’s from all the roadside stores and gas stations I think you’d have enough to feed their stock car loving, WWE supportin’, American flag wavin’ clientele for at least a couple years. I mean, who eats, and must I say enjoys, these anyway? Any of you readers? Seems to me you could get a lot more bang for your buck elsewhere….I mean, hello Taco Bell and their Roosevelt menu!!!

Hitting the Road: Chick and Ruth’s Delly

July 08, 2009 By: Adam Category: Featured Restaurant, Hitting the Road

My love affair with Deli food is beyond comprehension. As I’ve mentioned before, I was raised in an Italian-Catholic household in Suburbia, USA, with absolutely no culinary connection to the old school, kosher-style Jewish deli that is so often depicted in popular culture. Once more, it’s not like I’ve had one of these gastronomic “awakening” moments that everyone seems to have (or at least claimed to have had) in college, as my taste for the All-American meal has pretty much remained, well, the same. Still, I’ve somehow developed a fascination for the old school deli classics despite never having had much experience with them, a strange but true fact which I can only attribute to way too many hours in front of the Travel Channel.

I blame this dude...

I’ve never been to Katz’s, seldom travel to the big city, and can’t admit to having ever tasted anything more “ethnic” than a Reuben, but recently I did get a chance to stop by one of Maryland’s best known delis in Chick and Ruth’s.
