Alright ya’ll (since this is the South), we’ve closed nominations and now will begin voting for the best of the regional Grub joints. Below you’ll find the choices and you can click here to vote. You do not have to vote on any given category if you are unfamiliar with the choices.
Keep in mind these were the readers nominations and GrubGrade has made no distinction as to which ones are actually regional (exceptions include the exclusion of obvious ones such as Diet Coke or Papa John’s) so feel free to flame anyone that nominated inappropriate choices.
Voting will remain open until Sunday July 12th at 11:59 pm). You will not be able to see the results until after voting has closed.
We’ll be rolling out voting for Central, West & Northeast during the month of July to culminate in the ultimate final round to crown the best ‘o the best of the regional joints. Enjoy! And feel free to try to persuade others in the comments why you think yours is the best choice.

I must say, I do very much appreciate Grub Grade’s enthusiasm for this Battle Royal. Get it on!
1well since flaming for recommendations is open, id like to point out that jimmy johns started in champaign, illinois. which is obviously not in the south.
2Kevin, Five Guys started in DC, Schlotzsky’s started in TX…my point is that a lot of these places are chains that don’t exist solely in the South. However, places like Ria’s Bluebird and Tierra are limited only to Atlanta, not the South in general. I guess what I am saying is stop being a Debbie Downer and enjoy this!
3We have a Taqueria del Sol in Norfolk, Va., and it’s family owned. Not even close to being a chain. It also kicks major ass.
I still stand my claim that Virginia is not part of the North East, but since it is considered to be so, here, why is Five Guys on the Southern list? They originated outside of DC in Northern Virginia.
4I did my vote!
5oh im not trying to put anyone down, just pointing it out and thanks for pointing out the others.
6Haha…I saw this controversey coming from miles away. The original sectioned off regions had Maryland in the Southern Region! I don’t consider MD a southern state and I only consider the bottom half of VA as southern. Maybe there should’ve been a Mid-Atlantic region too? Agree about 5Guys too Raiders…with all these small local chains branching out it’s hard to figure this thing out. When I saw it on the South Region, I just figured it would also show up on the NorthEast.
But as Bear pointed out…
7“Keep in mind these were the readers nominations and GrubGrade has made no distinction as to which ones are actually regional”
Let the flaming begin
:) Coca-Cola and RC as regional sodas? Give me a break. I know they started in the south. What about Sun Drop?
8Please don’t take this post as a serious flame. This best of is something fun I’m not trying to be an a**.
Haha. Thanks for the back-up Ryan. I knew (and secretly hoped) this would happen. That’s kind of the whole point of the poll anyways. I wanted to figure out what regional meant to others and what was the best of the region.
Just because someone nominated a place means nothing whatsoever but if were to win the voting then we’ve got ourselves a consensus…..and if they people say it’s of the region, it’s of the region. Sometimes it’s hard to know when something has outgrown it’s local feel or influence. That’s also why Coca-Cola and RC have been included because they are so iconically a Southern creation.
I personally don’t think someone can necessarily be right or wrong in a lot of these situations but I love to hear the different opinions and reasoning behind choices.
FLAME ON!
9WHY DOES IT MATTER WHERE IT STARTED?????? The point is voting on favorites, so even if a restaurant started all the way across the country (or around the world!) it may be popular in the south, so I can nominate it as a favorite. The Five Guys nomination is totally valid, because it is all the rage here in NC. I can’t think of any burger chain that started in the south that is popular at all. There is Backyard Burgers, but I’m not going to nominate them because I don’t like their burgers. Chile Roja and La Botana are local places that only people who live in NC know about, and I nominated them along with Five Guys, and that is okay! Thanks for this fun battle royale!
10FIGHT!!! FIGHT!!! FIGHT!!!
Truly a battle now…and we’re only on the first region.
11NC Barbecue is the best because we have two varieties: eastern and western bbq
12Eastern is more of a vinegar based sauce, and western is a sweeter sauce with more tomato. I like a combination of both!
Nobody nominated McAlisters Deli? Jason’s is ok, but McAlisters is better. Voting for Schlotskys in protest.
13As someone in Texas let me inform you which of those are also in Texas (maybe we should have been in the southern division)
Burger Joint
Cheeburger Cheeburger
Five Guys
Krystal
Dessert/Candy
Blue Bell ice cream
Grocery Store
Food Lion
Sub/Sandwich Shop
Schlotzkys
Firehouse Subs
Jason’s Deli
Wildcard
Waffle House
Chick-fil-A
I didn’t write down any obviously national ones, like the sodas or the snickers bars.
14Damn, that Dixie Bones place in the banner ad looks pretty good. I guess either no one here has been there, or liked it that much.
15Why not have a fried chicken category in it’s own?
Bojangles and Zaxbys missing from this list entirely? C’mon man.
I forgave you for the lack of various amazing chip brands in your battle (and thought the fact that you couldn’t get them was a little shoddy..) but this is just silly.
