Fast Food Review: Tuscan Chicken Melt from Subway

June 02, 2009 By: John Category: Chicken, Reviews, Sandwiches

Subway is not a restaurant I visit frequently.  I don’t like paying for a sandwich that doesn’t have a lot of meat to it.  Sure, a regular footlong costs only $5, but I can find a similar hoagie for the same price and with more meat at a local shop.  However, I do find that their veggie hoagies are pretty decent.  Fairly cheap, and you can load up on the veggies.  It is usually a nice lunch time sandwich.

By the promo picture alone, this initially looks like the greatest new Subway sandwich.

Subway’s latest sandwich is the Tuscan Chicken Melt, which is described as:

Delicious Tuscan-seasoned chicken drizzled in olive vinaigrette and smothered in melted cheese.

For bread I chose the hearty Italian, and also added provolone cheese.  I only added tomatoes, lettuce, and red onions so I could get the full flavor of the chicken and vinaigrette.  My initial reaction after my first bite was that my bread was stale.  It was toasted, but not enough.  They put the sandwich in the oven just long enough to melt the cheese.  And speaking of the cheese, there was no flavor to it.  Perhaps I should have asked for extra cheese because no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find the taste of provolone.

The chicken itself lacked any flavor, but the ‘tuscan seasoning’ was ok.  It basically just tasted like Italian dressing.  The seasoning and vinaigrette definitely were the strongest flavors of the sandwich.  I was trying to decide if I loved it or hated it, but I just kept deciding this was mediocre.  The vegetables added just enough flavor where they weren’t overpowering the rest of the ingredients.

Once again, my visit to Subway was just average.  I didn’t walk away feeling overly satisfied, but it wasn’t so awful that I couldn’t finish the sandwich.  As part of the Subway line of Fresh Fit Choices it deserves some credit for being pretty guilt free in the nutrition department.  The big question is…Would I buy this one again?  (WIBIA Shout-out)  No.  If you have a standard sandwich at Subway, I’d say stick with that on your next visit!

  • Pros – Tuscan seasoning tasted decent as did the vegetables.  As with everything at Subway, customizable.  Only 9 grams of fat for the 6″ sub.
  • Cons – Lack of cheese flavor, stale bread.
