Food News: Famous Daves Named Greatest Ribs in America

May 31, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Food News

Lots of haters on my Famous Daves post from a little while back.  Although I didn’t have much on my plate to show for as far as BBQ is concerned, I thought this news was interesting.  I’m not trying to say Famous Daves has the greatest ribs in America (I rarely get their ribs), I’m just saying they have been shown some love.  Who do you think has the greatest ribs in the country?

Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que won the award for “Greatest Ribs in America” at the 18th Annual Marc’s Great American Rib Cook-Off in Cleveland, Ohio.

The prestigious BBQ competition was held over the Memorial Day weekend and included many of the top competitive grillers in America. Organizers estimate that the BBQ experts at the event serve up more than 1 million ribs over the course of the weekend.

“The Cleveland rib cook-off is one of the most competitive in the nation, and it has a long and storied tradition in the world of barbecue,” says Christopher O’Donnell, president and CEO of Famous Dave’s.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our Rib Team. They’ve added another esteemed trophy to our own tradition of award-winning BBQ.”

In addition to being named “Greatest Ribs in America,” Famous Dave’s took home a third-place trophy in the “Greatest Sauce in America” competition.

Browsing through my GrubGrade Picture Collection…

May 30, 2009 By: Ryan Category: From the Editor

Why do I torture myself by making it an almost nightly routine to browse through my GrubGrade picture collection?  All it does is entice me to start grubbing at midnight.  Currently craving some zPizza.  Specifically the ZBQ Pizza.  BBQ sauce, mozzerrella, BBQ chicken, roasted peppers, red onions, tomatoes, fresh cilantro and sweet corn.  Not quite as simple and delicious as the BBQ Chicken Pizza from Il Forno Pizzeria, but still a very solid choice that I can’t stop staring at.

Food News: The Pizza Hut P’Zone Starting at $5

May 30, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Food News

5 bucks seems to be the magic price these days.  I guess it’s all in response to Subway’s $5 Footlongs.  Pizza Hut boasts, “Sub leaving you Cold?  Heat things Up.”  Pizza Hut has started a new ad campaign of their own to promote their P’Zones starting at $5 (the Pepperoni being $5 and the Meaty and Classic are an extra 99¢).  Before this new campaign, I had been seeing P’Zones priced in the $5.99-$6.99 range so basically this ad campaign is to promote a limited time $1 price decrease.

Americans are giving the cold shoulder to cold sandwiches; the $5 Pepperoni P’Zone(R) pizza from Pizza Hut(R) has everyone hot for more than a pound of steamy, delicious food at a great price. For $5, would you rather have a hot and tasty meal with great pizza taste or a cold sandwich? We thought so.

The hardest part about ordering the P’Zone is deciding which of the three varieties to choose. Options include:

* Classic P’Zone: Filled with cheese, Italian sausage, green peppers and red onions, the Classic P’Zone is filled with more than one pound of pizza goodness

* Meaty P’Zone: This P’Zone really lives up to its mouth watering name, packed with cheese, pepperoni, ham, Italian sausage, and seasoned beef

* Pepperoni P’Zone: A pepperoni lover’s dream, this P’Zone is loaded with pepperoni and melted cheese for a crave curing meal any time of day.

All P’Zone pizzas are served with a side of marinara sauce.

I know there are some P’Zone haters out there, and I’m not one of them.  Actually, I’ve never been a fan of the pizza at Pizza Hut but I’ve always liked Pizza Hut’s take on the calzone with their “Over a Pound” P’Zones.  Early on in the epic 3 month existence of GrubGrade, I actually posted a pretty favorable review.  Check it out… GrubGrade’s P’Zone Review.

Food News: Dairy Queen Blizzard of the Month for June is the Brownie Batter Blizzard

May 30, 2009 By: James Category: Food News

Monday is the 1st of June, which means the debut of another Dairy Queen Blizzard of the Month.  May’s blizzard was the Raspberry Truffle Blizzard.  The Raspberry Truffle Blizzard was vanilla soft serve, rich chocolate truffles and a sweet raspberry topping.  This month DQ has done away with the vanilla and raspberry flavors and gone straight chocolate with the Brownie Batter Blizzard.  June’s blizzard consists of chocolate soft serve, scoops of brownie batter and moist chunks of brownie.

I can tell already that the chocolate in this dessert is going to be overwhelming, similar to the Midnight Truffle Blizzard.  In my opinion, they should have combined vanilla soft serve with the brownie pieces and batter, but who knows.  I only have to wait a couple more days to find out for sure.  First introduced in 2004, the Brownie Batter Blizzard is one of the most successful of all flavors debuting as a Blizzard of the Month so if you’ve had it before, feel free to comment.

First Impressions: Wendy’s Frosty-cino

May 29, 2009 By: John Category: First Impressions

I usually window shop before visiting a fast food restaurant, checking out the banners that hang in their windows to see what the latest items are.  Wendy’s latest item is their ‘Frosty-cino’.  Which, according to their website describes it as:

Real dairy Frosty with coffee syrup from real-brewed coffee. We hand spin it, top it with real whipped cream and drizzle with chocolate to create an exciting, deliciously different Frosty Shake.

Wendy's Frosty-cino

A small (12 oz) cost $2.39, which wasn’t a horrible price.  If you happen to go to some ‘high end’ coffee shops, their versions will cost about that if not more.  I’m not sure what I was expecting, but when I took my first sip, I definitely enjoyed it.  I realized it had been quite a long time since I had a shake from a fast food joint.  The coffee flavor isn’t overpowering.  It’s basically coffee ice cream.  For some reason, I didn’t mix the whipped cream and syrup with the rest of the drink, and when I got to the end, it was way too sweet.  So if you get this, definitely mix everything together.  It’s a nice treat, something I’ll definitely get again.

The Mid-Atlantic Potato Chip Throwdown: “Who’s Who”

May 29, 2009 By: Adam Category: Snacks

All things considered, we’ve had quite a week here on GrubGrade.com.  Not only did we experience pure sweet potato nirvana in a fried form (Route 11 Potato Chips, read our review here), but we even managed to arrive at some semblance of a consensus as to which Mid-Atlantic chip company makes the best potato chip.  All of this, of course, without our fearless leader Ryan, who along with Bear Silber was last seen fleeing Los Angeles in a ’94 Bronco while claiming to have invented a “Chalupizza” that even this guy would have trouble downing.

Before we reveal the “final” results of Tuesday’s Throwdown, let me emphasize that the testers more or less enjoyed all the chips tasted, with the notable exception of Sample 3, which sucked. We’re not hoity-toity “experts” here people, and (outside of maybe myself) we’re not going to make up some metaphysical conceit touting the perceived advantages of a “naturally crisp Idaho spud with a subtle yet full bodied flavor that comes from organic French sea salt and pure cottonseed oil.”  With that being said, giddyup…

“Sample 1″=Herr’s

herrsFinal Score:  7.66 (Good)

Nobody in our group was very familiar with Herr’s chips, which might be why most of us guessed that these were Lay’s brand chips to begin with.  We all really liked this chip, and the brand gets my personal recommendation as well.  These are just good solid potato chips with an above average flavor, texture, and a nice cover of salt which isn’t as skimpy as some other brands.  I’ve raved about Herr’s products before, and have yet to buy something from this company which I haven’t enjoyed.

Final Verdict: I’d Buy ‘em

“Sample 2″=Utz

utzFinal Score: 5.83 (Medicore)

This was the big shocker for everyone in the group (including myself) who had pegged the Utz chips we all grew up on as being Sample #1 or Sample #4 (our highest scoring chips.)  I don’t know whether or not the bag we tasted from just happened to be sitting around too long or what, but we all sort of felt like these chips we’re “just OK” and didn’t have much flavor.  Frankly, I think this is because we were trying to be too “official” in our tasting, and didn’t properly enjoy the chips as they are supposed to be enjoyed – that is to say we didn’t just stuff our faces with these things.  Coincidentally, I tasted some Utz Kettle Chips for the first time yesterday, and loved them. While the company did not come up with the best showing in our test, they nevertheless produce a plethora of chips which I would suggest, including their unique Carolina BBQ chips.

Final Verdict:Procure’ them from a friend’s house, then buy more as needed

“Sample 3″=Martin’s

martinsFinal Score: 4.33 (Poor)

We’ve been saying it all along; these chips were horrible.  They tasted old, they had little potato flavor, and they would have received a score of -2.7 had it not been for their surprisingly sturdy and enjoyable crunch.  I, along with the rest of the team, would not recommend even looking at these in the snack food aisle, much less spending money on them.

Final Verdict: Avoid at all costs

“Sample 4″=Route 11

route11-pc-lsFinal Score: 6.16 (Average)

These chips were good – if not otherwise divisive – because of their uniqueness. As I said the other day, they really aren’t your standard, cheap-and-massed-produced kind of chips, and probably more aptly fit the ‘kettle cooked’ definition of a chip. I’ve raved about Route 11′s flavored chips before, but I think the concept of a regular, ‘minimalist’ chip that is ‘lightly salted’ may just have been a little too extreme for those belonging to the age bracket that our tasters fall into.  Still, knowing some of the old farts who read this blog, I’d definitely recommend these if you can find them.

Final Verdict: Try first, then stock up if enjoyed

“Sample 5″=Lays

lays_classicFinal Score: 7.50 (Good)

I’ll be honest with you in that I came into this experiment somewhat hoping the national brand of chips would come out below all the local chips.  It’s not that I hate Frito-Lay, but I just resent the fact that every major “national” snack brand seems to belong to the company.  That being said I have to admit these chips were good.  They are, like one of our taste testers said, “what I think of when I think of a chip.” Because of a stubborn and not-quite-accurate ideal of chip makers like Utz and Herr’s employing only the finest in Amish labor I will probably continue to buy Utz and Herr’s chips over Lays, although I’ll gladly concede to a bag if out of my Mid-Atlantic comfort zone.

Final Verdict: I’d Buy ‘em (If on sale and out of the Mid-Atlantic)

A Note on Price

If cost is an issue, I would recommend Utz.  I’ve often encountered their 3.75 oz bags for only a buck or so, which beats anything else I’ve seen.  That is except for Martin’s, but we’re not going to touch that again…

Food News: Burger King’s New Healthier Kid’s Meals

May 28, 2009 By: James Category: Food News

With menu items like the Tendercrisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch sandwich and the Whopper, Burger King is probably not the healthiest place, but at least they try.  In an effort to promote healthier eating habits to kids, Burger King is introducing 3 new kids meals.  Each of the new additions have less than 560 calories and 600 milligrams of sodium.

  • Meal one consists of 2 BK burger shots, apple fries with dipping sauce and fat-free milk
  • Meal two consists of a hamburger, apple fries with dipping sauce and apple juice
  • Meal three consists of 4 chicken tenders, apple fries and fat-free milk

The new menu items are part of BK’s pledge to only advertise meals to kids 12 and under that meet higher nutritional standards.

Taco Bell Test Kitchen Trip Preview

May 28, 2009 By: Ryan Category: From the Editor, Hitting the Road

OK, it’s 3am and I just got in less than an hour ago.  Long day.  I plan to sleep for the next 6-16 hours or so.  If you didn’t know, I was in California the last couple of days thanks to the kind folks at Taco Bell.  I met some really nice people and had some good food.  I’m going to work on a more detailed post later but until then, here’s a brief sneak peak preview.

My Creation: Fully Loaded Cheesy Volcano Chicken Nachos

Once again, this is just a quick preview post.  I took a ton of pics and video so I’m planning to put something together once I take a look at the footage.  All in all, it was a really great time and my only regret is not finding a few minutes to hit up In-N-Out Burger.  It has been a couple of years since I last had one and I missed my shot this time around.  Oh well, it’s not like I went hungry.  You’ll see.  Currently craving the Volcano Box.

Stay tuned.
